nightlife terms.
The vocabulary used across AdultJourneys — precise, no euphemism. Each term links to the cities where it's operationally common.
- Bar fine aka bar-fine, barfine
- A flat fee paid to a bar (typically Thai or Philippine soi bars) to take a worker off shift for the evening. Separate from any subsequent arrangement. Posted at the entrance of most operating venues.
- Used in 🇹🇭Bangkok 🇹🇭Pattaya 🇹🇭Jomtien 🇵🇭Manila 🇰🇭Phnom Penh
- Boys-town aka boyztown, boys town
- An adjacent gay-bar complex in a Thai resort city, organised as a courtyard of open-fronted bars. Boyztown in Pattaya is the prototype; the format has been copied across Southeast Asia.
- Used in 🇹🇭Pattaya 🇹🇭Jomtien
- Coyote aka coyote dance
- Thai-origin format of paid-to-dance women on a raised platform inside a bar — distinct from gogo (which involves more performative undress). Coyote bars run earlier, are usually licensed, and the workers do not solo-engage with customers.

- De Wallen aka the wallen, red light district amsterdam
- Amsterdam's window-prostitution district around the Oude Kerk. Windows are individually rented by workers under the Dutch regulatory framework. Heavily photographed despite local restrictions; smaller in 2026 than at any point in the last fifty years.

- Fishbowl aka fishbowl bar, fish-bowl
- Hong Kong / Macau / Wan Chai format — workers wait behind a one-way glass partition; customers select via numbered tag. Posted prices include the room and an initial drink; further fees are layered on. Notorious for bill inflation.

- Gentlemen's club aka strip club
- American and Canadian licensed-format venue with stage performance, lap dance, and (in some Quebec and Nevada locations) regulated private services. The Montréal tradition operates under Quebec's regulated provincial framework — more open and licensed than the comparable US format.

- Gogo aka go-go, go go bar
- Thai-origin format combining stage dance with available bar-fine arrangement. Distinct from beer bars (no stage) and coyote bars (no bar-fine). Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza are the highest-density gogo districts; Walking Street the largest single-venue concentration.
- Used in 🇹🇭Bangkok 🇹🇭Pattaya 🇹🇭Jomtien
- Hostess club aka hostess bar, kyabakura
- Japanese-origin format: customers buy hourly company at a table, drinks are heavily marked up, no explicit physical service. Kabukichō (Tokyo) and Korean / Manila variants. Distinct from the Western strip-club model — performance is conversation, not dance.

- Kabukichō aka kabukicho
- Tokyo's primary adult-entertainment district, east of Shinjuku station. The densest concentration of hostess clubs, host clubs, soaplands, and pink-salon venues in Japan. Photography is locally enforced against.
- Used in 🇯🇵Tokyo
- Kathoey aka ladyboy
- Thai term for trans women, broadly accepted as a third gender in Thai culture. Visible across Thai nightlife scenes; rights expanded post-2025 marriage equality. The English calque 'ladyboy' is widely used but is the visitor's word, not the community's.

- KTV aka karaoke ktv, karaoke room
- Karaoke-room hostess service, dominant in East and Southeast Asia. Customers rent a private room with sound system; hostesses are paid by the hour to drink and sing with the group. Korean-style KTV and Japanese kyabakura are the two main lineages.
- Used in 🇰🇷Seoul 🇵🇭Manila 🇰🇭Phnom Penh 🇻🇳Ho Chi Minh City
- Lady drink aka lady-drink, ladydrink
- A drink the customer buys for a worker, costed at 2–4× the customer drink price. The premium funds the worker's commission. Universal in Thai, Philippine and Cambodian soi-bar economies; calculated separately from any further arrangement.
- Used in 🇹🇭Bangkok 🇹🇭Pattaya 🇵🇭Manila 🇰🇭Phnom Penh
- Lockout law aka lockout laws
- Australian regulation (2014–2021, largely repealed by 2026) requiring venues to refuse new entrants after a set hour and stop serving by another. Defined the Sydney CBD nightlife economy for a decade and pushed scene density toward Newtown, King's Cross and Melbourne's Fitzroy.
- Used in 🇦🇺Sydney 🇦🇺Melbourne
- Mongering aka monger
- Long-stay or repeat-visit travel oriented around adult-nightlife venues, especially in Southeast Asia. The community vocabulary is informal but stable; the term carries no inherent value judgment in regulars' usage.
- Used in 🇹🇭Pattaya 🇵🇭Manila 🇰🇭Phnom Penh
- Pink salon aka pink-salon, pinsaro
- Lower-tier Japanese adult venue, distinct from soaplands and hostess clubs. Cheaper, faster, less private. Concentrated in Kabukichō's back streets.
- Used in 🇯🇵Tokyo
- Reeperbahn aka the reeperbahn
- Hamburg's mile-long adult-entertainment strip in St. Pauli. Includes the Herbertstraße (men-only block of female windows), the Davidstraße bars, and the surrounding club scene. Operating since the 19th century; the German prostitution framework regulates it visibly.
- Used in 🇩🇪Hamburg
- Sex-positive club aka sex positive, kinkfriendly
- Berlin-originated format combining electronic-music club with explicit on-floor and dark-room space, mixed-orientation by policy. KitKatClub and Insomnia are the prototypes; the format has spread to Tel Aviv, São Paulo and a handful of European cities.

- Soapland aka sopurando
- Japanese venue offering a bath-house format with explicit service. Legally classified under the Anti-Prostitution Law via a long-standing technicality. Concentrated in Tokyo (Yoshiwara), Kawasaki, and Osaka. Strictly Japanese-clientele in most locations.
- Used in 🇯🇵Tokyo
- Soi aka soi bar
- Thai for 'side street' or 'alley'. In nightlife usage, a small named alley containing a cluster of open-fronted beer bars. Soi Cowboy, Soi 6 (Pattaya), Soi VC (Jomtien) and Soi Eric (Phuket) are the prototypes.
- Used in 🇹🇭Bangkok 🇹🇭Pattaya 🇹🇭Jomtien
- Termas aka terma, termas brasileiras
- Brazilian regulated private clubs combining sauna, restaurant, bar and adult services under one roof. Operate under Brazilian framework with posted rates. Centauro, Marrakech and Bahamas in São Paulo are the long-running anchors.
- Used in 🇧🇷São Paulo 🇧🇷Rio de Janeiro
- Walking Street aka pattaya walking street
- Pattaya's central pedestrianised nightlife strip, roughly 500m long, running from Beach Road to the Bali Hai pier. The highest single-street density of gogo bars in Thailand. Closes to vehicles in the evening.
- Used in 🇹🇭Pattaya
- Window aka window prostitution, window worker
- Self-employed worker renting a window in a regulated district, the dominant format in Amsterdam (De Wallen) and Hamburg (Herbertstraße). Distinct from venue-employed work; pricing is window-by-window.
