Tokyo, after dark

Kabukicho neon. Hostess bars. Golden Gai. Six districts, six different nights.

Kabukicho for the neon and the layered nightlife — host clubs, hostess clubs, snack bars, kyabakura. Golden Gai for the smallest bars on earth. Roppongi for the foreigner-friendly crowd. Shibuya for the chaos. The most layered after-dark culture on the planet.

Where to stay in Tokyo

Stay in Shinjuku if you want walking distance to the main district and don't mind paying for it. Shibuya is the mid-range play — ten minutes by transit, better hotels for the money, locals at the bar after midnight. The off-centre option — two transit stops out — costs about half and adds a taxi back after 02:00. Pick the one that matches what you're optimising for.

III

Before you go to Tokyo

No phones in Kabukichō. Both the touts and the working-women react to a raised camera. The side streets behind Don Quijote are the most-sensitive blocks.

Carry cash, lots of it. Most adult venues are cash-only and the smaller bars in Golden Gai don't take cards at all. 7-Eleven ATMs accept foreign cards 24/7 and don't charge a fee.

The metro stops at 00:30 sharp and doesn't run nights. After that, taxis are everywhere, metered and honest — Uber works but is unnecessary. The first hop is 500 yen drop-flag.

Aggressive touting on Kabukichō's main streets is the most common avoidable problem. The 'come to my bar' pitch ends in the bottle-keep scam. 'No' once loudly, walk past, don't engage.

Tolerant, not effusive. Shinjuku Ni-chōme has been the gay village since the 1950s — Arty Farty, Aiiro Café, hundreds of small bars across two blocks. Same-sex marriage NOT federally legal — Shibuya/Setagaya/Toshima wards issue partnership certificates but they aren't binding nationally. PDA is rare across the board, not specifically against same-sex couples. Trans care is bureaucratic but available.

IV

From the field

Spent four nights, learnt the map. The places everyone in the guide says to go are the places everyone goes — the actual scene is one street over and the prices are half. Skip the first place the taxi suggests. The version the locals use is a different night entirely.
