Singapore, after dark
Geylang. Marina Bay rooftops. The world's most polished cocktail scene.
Geylang is the legal designated red-light district — orderly, regulated, distinct from anything else in Asia. Marina Bay Sands has the rooftop. Clarke Quay has the crowd. Atlas at Parkview is on every world’s-best list for a reason.
Where to stay in Singapore
Stay in Robertson Quay if you want walking distance to the main district and don't mind paying for it. Bugis is the mid-range play — ten minutes by transit, better hotels for the money, locals at the bar after midnight. The off-centre option — two transit stops out — costs about half and adds a taxi back after 02:00. Pick the one that matches what you're optimising for.
Before you go to Singapore
Don't photograph at Geylang. The regulated lorong scene is camera-shy by convention. Phones down between Lorong 4 and Lorong 24 — Sims Avenue end especially.
Carry a card; cash is optional. Singapore is card-first everywhere. The smaller Geylang KTVs and the older bars are still cash-only; ATMs at any DBS or OCBC ATM are free.
MRT closes 00:00 (00:30 on Friday and Saturday). After hours, Grab is the default; the street taxis are honest but more expensive. Late-night surge in Geylang is real but the rides are short.
Strict drug enforcement is the most important rule. Possession of any amount, including residue on personal items, is a serious offence. Caned offences. Take this seriously.
Decriminalised in 2022, still tightly regulated. Section 377A was repealed in 2022; same-sex marriage NOT legal and the constitution was simultaneously amended to define marriage as opposite-sex only. The gay scene runs out of Tanjong Pagar and Tras Street — Tantric Bar, Taboo. PDA is uncommon and discreet by social convention; trans care is regulated and available.
From the field
Spent four nights, learnt the map. The places everyone in the guide says to go are the places everyone goes — the actual scene is one street over and the prices are half. Skip the first place the taxi suggests. The version the locals use is a different night entirely.
