Seoul, after dark

Hongdae for the students. Itaewon for the mixed crowd. Gangnam for the rest.

Hongdae for the indie bands and the student crowd, Itaewon for the queer scene and the foreign crowd, Gangnam for the polished clubs and room salons. Public transport runs late, the soju doesn’t stop, and the layered nightlife rewards anyone who learns the map.

Where to stay in Seoul

Stay in Itaewon if you want walking distance to the main district and don't mind paying for it. Gangnam is the mid-range play — ten minutes by transit, better hotels for the money, locals at the bar after midnight. The off-centre option — two transit stops out — costs about half and adds a taxi back after 02:00. Pick the one that matches what you're optimising for.

Before you go to Seoul

Don't photograph the Gangnam room-salon facades. The doors are unmarked by convention. Tourists with phones get the door closed politely; the scene resets and pretends not to exist.

Carry cash for the hostess scene. Most room salons and shirt rooms require Korean card or cash. Foreign cards work at the upscale Itaewon bars but not at the older Gangnam venues. KEB Hana ATMs at Hongdae and Gangnam stations are foreign-friendly.

Metro closes 00:00 (01:00 on Friday/Saturday). Use Kakao T after — Uber doesn't work in Korea. The street taxis around Itaewon late are price-flexible; the Kakao-dispatched ones aren't.

Aggressive touting around Hongdae and Itaewon is the most common avoidable problem. The 'I have a room upstairs' pitch ends in a bottle-service bill. Walk past without breaking pace.

Tolerant in the bar zones, cautious in public. Itaewon's 'Homo Hill' is the gay anchor; Jongno 3-ga is the older, more discreet scene. Same-sex marriage NOT legal — no partnership recognition. PDA in Itaewon and Hongdae is fine; on the metro and in the suburbs it isn't. Trans care is private and expensive; visible trans identity is rare.

From the field

Spent four nights, learnt the map. The places everyone in the guide says to go are the places everyone goes — the actual scene is one street over and the prices are half. Skip the first place the taxi suggests. The version the locals use is a different night entirely.
