Buenos Aires, after dark

Dinner at midnight. Clubs at 3. Tango until dawn.

Palermo is the polished neighbourhood. The milongas (tango halls) are the experience that justifies the trip. The VIP private-club scene runs above the public one. Nothing opens before midnight, nothing closes before sunrise, and the asado runs the whole afternoon.

Where to stay in Buenos Aires

Stay in Palermo Soho if you want walking distance to the main district and don't mind paying for it. The off-centre option — two transit stops out — costs about half and adds a taxi back after 02:00. Pick the one that matches what you're optimising for.

III

Before you go to Buenos Aires

Use 'blue rate' for cash. Argentina's official-and-blue dual rate means cash USD at a cueva on Florida is roughly double the card rate. For nightlife, this matters — most adult venues take pesos cash at the blue rate.

Carry cash USD or pesos. Pesos are fine; USD is preferred at the high-end venues and the cuevas exchange at the blue rate. Bring small notes — the cuevas don't break 100s reliably.

Subte closes 23:00; night buses run the centre. Use Cabify or DiDi after — Uber operates but the local apps are faster. Skip the street taxis hovering at Palermo entrances; the meter games are still common.

Pickpocketing in Palermo Soho on Friday nights is the most common avoidable problem. The aggressive 'open-the-bottle' scam at Avenida Niceto bars is the second.

South America's most established gay scene. Palermo Soho's 'Pink Triangle' (around Gorriti and Acuña de Figueroa) is the anchor; Recoleta has the older, more discreet venues. Same-sex marriage since 2010, the first in Latin America. Trans rights since 2012 (one of the world's most progressive frameworks). PDA is universally unremarkable.

IV

From the field

Spent four nights, learnt the map. The places everyone in the guide says to go are the places everyone goes — the actual scene is one street over and the prices are half. Skip the first place the taxi suggests. The version the locals use is a different night entirely.
